   Yesterday I attended a tutorial on a super technical topic where the lecturer was an amazing South Asian woman and.. it was incredible how much disrespect she was getting in the comments by men of all backgrounds who just probably frankly didn’t believe that she knows much more than them.

     Honestly I think the only way to do this sort of thing is to do a webinar, not a zoom call, and to have mods take and field questions.

     to be clear even if she wasn't technical this is all still revolting. but there's something especially grating about how some men in technical spaces definitely hold a massive grudge towards women and minorities they perceive to be more technical than them

     I remember watching a woman who *literally created a programming language* give a tutorial about *that language*, where men (paying to hear her!) in the room criticized her for not knowing what she was talking about.

     The misogyny in tech spaces is awful.

     @skinnylatte Unfortunately not at all surprising. It's actually nucking futs how deeply ingrained this shit is, to the point that even consciously forward thinking, "enlightened" men will show this glaring blind spot about women in highly technical fields, to the point that they can't even tell in the moment that it's happening.

     Especially stuff like this that crosses over with "enthusiast" stuff. The moment there's a bit of feminine energy in the room, it's like the normies are invading their special nerdy place (meanwhile, [insert first half century of digital computing history, e.g. grace hopper, ida rhoades, {so many more it's almost an insult to name drop just two}], but I guess because they were monochrome in photos it means they were rare historical outliers?)
