@clayote mm, but then the question is why don't other people use it. Or there is more to it after all.

@alexm This may be the only feature I’ve never heard any unspoken rules about on the Fediverse.
There’s the “ratio” concept on Twitter but it only exists because everybody sees the same exact numbers. -

@hypolite fair enough. It's just that usually in situations like this elsewhere hitting that button would be inappropriate for some reason and there's some unspoken rule that states it - so trying to be careful.

@alexm So, you probably still have this conception from centralized social networks that the engagement numbers you see are absolute. It isn’t the case in a decentralized social network. Someone could also have favorited the post from another instance but you wouldn’t know about it from your own.
Bottom line is that you should do what feels right to you, disregarding any external metrics because you have a very partial view of the network. The only thing you can be sure about is how you feel about a certain post, so smash that favorite button when you feel like it! -

@alexm Not as much if people who see a given post on their instance don't see the same number of likes because of their own partial view of the network. Technically, only the post author's instance can have the exact count of likes, so you can't easily ratio from another instance for example. -

@alexm I'm not sure either, your safest bet is to assume the numbers you see are for your instance's eyes only. -
