In Spain they didn't use gas. Most our energetic problems linked with datacenters are the macroproyects of renovables. And the nuclear.
But there is new permissions in Italia, Germany, Ireland and so on.
The experts in these topic is Jill MacArdle, from Beyond Fossil Fuels. They are keeping the track of gas in european datacenters.

@quixoticgeek For more infos, if datacenters with gas turbine power in their car parks exist somewhere in Europe etc., you could ask @gerrymcgovern
Be aware that there's a big difference between 'Europe' and the 'EU'!

Certainly gas is being used for data centers in Ireland

@quixoticgeek 1. The EU has an official plan to phase out fossil fuels (even if some countries have watered it down).
2. It was just in the media: In Germany, a US-company wanted to built a data-center with gas turbines. They got so many protests from all sides (including regional politicians) that they gave up the plan.
3. The EU doesn't allow them in that form but the USA tries hard with lobbyism: https://www.desmog.com/2026/04/29/inside-the-plot-to-cover-europe-with-gas-powered-ai-data-centres/
4. The EU now plans sustainability standards: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/eu-plans-energy-standards-data-centres-amid-concerns-over-soaring-power-use-2026-06-03/ -

There's been lots of talk about US AI datacentres having gas turbine generators parked in the car park to power them. Does anyone know of any European datacentres with similar gas turbine power units to power them? Or has the EUs stronger environmental laws kept them at bay ?
