@Cocoa Likely a zoomie larping as millenial. Building old pc setups has been a thing for like two decades already, only popularised by LGR and recently Action :mokouVomit: Retro.

@Cocoa seen the LGR video, high likelihood that the drive will just fail and you can just get a flash drive or burn DVDs instead nowadays, it's pointless

@Cocoa I dunno. Zip disks are fucking shite and you probably shouldn't even bother to touch them, but he has some level of a point has apparently there's a lot of Gen Z like that, and if the fuckers cared enough, we could probably escape the own nothing digital future instead of playing with Zip Disks or something

@coolboymew @Cocoa they do have a niche use that is great though for retrocomputing.

original macintosh have a 50-pin SCSI port on the back. it's their only user-accessible expansion port. There's a SCSI external ZIP drive. You can boot your Mac off it and instead of an 800kb slow as balls boot disk you can have a relatively very fast 100 or 250 megabyte boot disk. sure it might fail but you can get a big stack of them, and they're more reliable than the floppy at this point.

@sun @Cocoa @coolboymew There's BlueSCSI SD-card adapter which I think works with the original Macintosh. And for floppies, the FloppyEmu has been a thing for years on Macintoshes as well.

@coolboymew @Cocoa btw here's my own rebuilt DOS machine. except this wasn't a "retro" build, I did a bunch of work to source all new parts. The motherboard was a modern Pentium 4 industrial board that still had ISA slots. The sound card is an Orpheus 2. The VGA is a Chinese "ATI Rage XL" recreation that was built as a replacement part for a computerized truck trailer system lol.

@Ree @Cocoa @coolboymew @sun If they ask more than 60 USD, it's likely not worth it. The prices became so inflated recently even for completely generic hardware in the recent years that it's not worth it. If you wanna play with old OSes, use 86Box for everything up to the Win9X era, and a normal VM from that point onward. In the case of 86Box, it's almost 100% as with the hardware in your hands, except it's not.

@Ree @Cocoa @coolboymew @sun Like for example I bought a decommissioned Leninovo ThinkCenter M55 with a Pentium D ~16 years ago I think for ~15 USD. Now that completely unremarkable space heater of a box that is useless for anything more than some simple CAD on WinXP apparently goes for around 120USD or more on ebay without shipping. It's ridiculous.
