This is a very depressing video.

We know what is happening but it is nice to hear from others in the industry. It's hard to believe we are in this timeline.

You don't need a new computer. You don't need ddr5. You will be fine.

Not like there's any games worth a shit anyway, which is the main reason for upgrading the pc

And most software runs fine even on old ddr3 builds. And anything 9th gen and after will run just about anything you can throw at it. We may become the Cuba of computers, but it's hardly the end.

I still have core2duos that run linux fine. I had to throw ssds in, but even with sata2, they're still pretty snappy.

Besides, the day of the cyberpunk has been predicted since at least the H/P/A days. Us old timers expected it.

The real issue will be code / repo access, and not so much hardware imo.

HW still does degrade though. Even though RAM should only fail due to poor config or other issue pushing too much power, SSD and GPU will eventually fail with both having cost and availability issues due to RAM components. It seems China will save us though... Glory to the CPC!

San Francisco might be the best argument against democracy that exists today, with Detroit & Boston being great examples from yesteryear

This is the second thread in which someone suggested computers "fail". In all my life I've never seen it.

I'm pretty optimistic about code because of codeberg, gitea etc and the oversupply of underemployed sw engineers. Would require a lot of govt "great walls" which may come, but are hopefully not competently implemented

Me either. The only reason I had to throw ssds in the duos was to saturate that sata bus for max speed since the spin drives are slow af. The old drives still ran fine though.

I have lost data before due to corruption, and even had a path truncated in one instance, but I've never had a drive itself fail.

Poor quality power, either spikes delivered by the network or lightning strikes, poor quality or degraded PSU, poorly designed mobo (becoming much more common) delivering power spikes to equipment.

Overclocked, esp with bad numbers as well

Disks are mechanical devices, so eventual failure of those is expected. Flash likewise wears out eventually. But I've never seen a CPU, motherboard, or RAM just stop working - unless it was obviously abused.

However, CRT monitors, I've had a handful of those just decide to crap out - which is funny because they're also supposed to be solid state. I guess high voltage is bad for longevity...

      Power -> guess I'm lucky
Overclocked -> I don't do that (mostly because I'm too lazy)

I do OC my studio rig, but with OC, the pump / radiator is likely to fail long before any drive.

Water cooled my last home server, what a pain in the ass, never again. Regular 4u tower and big ass-coolers from China work great.

I have an i9-9980XE I run at 4.5ghz. It's the last good chip intel made for audio processing. The modern power / efficiency core paradigm has been a real shitshow in that specific use case.

The latest ones like the 270k aren't too bad, still not as good as AMD though
