Looks like we're a "go" for switching to an induction stove/range Probably from Costco. Anyone have any recommendations? (I know folks have mentioned that physical controls a lot better than touch screens, for sure) #appliances #inducation

@ai6yr sorry for wandering in the room without context (I can’t find any). You’re doing this because of news in recent years that gas ranges are actually harmful? Also, cleaning an induction range seems like a no brainer.

      1. Human health

Scientific American: The Health Risks of Gas Stoves Explained

Gas stoves produce emissions that can harm human health and the environment. Experts answer questions about the dangers and how to limit them

      https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-health-risks-of-gas-stoves-explained/

      2. Planet health

Stanford: Climate and health impacts of natural gas stoves

Natural gas stoves release methane – a potent greenhouse gas – and other pollutants through leaks and incomplete combustion. Stanford researchers estimate that methane leaking from stoves inside U.S. homes has the same climate impact as about 500,000 gasoline-powered cars and the stoves can expose

      https://sustainability.stanford.edu/news/climate-and-health-impacts-natural-gas-stoves

      3. Cleaning -- so many boiled over batches of jam, all in the inside of the current very-hard-to-clean stove ( high end, Wolf... before they were acquired). Wolf was acquired in 2000... so the stove is at least 26 years old.

      4. (most importantly!) The Wolf gas range currently here is starting to have issues (parts no longer available, igniters cannot be replaced, knobs/mechanisms aging).

@slothrop @12thRITS @ai6yr Well, ymmv. My pots and pans were unfamiliar with this magnetism thing. I wound up buying a set for inductive cooking, then another when I did bad things to a pot during an unexpected impromptu experiment turning rice into carbon.

      I like the mats! Aprons?

      @12thRITS @ai6yr uh oh.

We’ve found that most pots do work in the end. The rule (of which I guess you’re aware) is that if a fridge magnet sticks to the bottom of the pot, it’s going to work fine on an induction range.

@12thRITS Paying my neighbor, a professional plumber, to do it! Plumbing is the bane of my existence and since natural gas is a safety hazard, going skip the adventure, lol.

Enjoy your new induction range! We made the switch 10 years ago, and haven’t regretted it.

I swore I checked this before, but yes, I have a live 240V circuit back behind the stove. (There's also a disgusting amount of food bits and crud back there... ewww) #appliances

New-to-me LG LSE4617 has been obtained (via the miracle of the Fediverse and ham radio fellowship), and a proper electrical cable purchased and connected to the induction range. Tomorrow, will remove the old gas stove and connect the induction range (cross fingers it all works, lol). #appliances

Installed and running! Boiled a pot of water. Gas definitely needs to be capped, the pipe extends out and you can't push the stove all the way out. Also needs to be capped per code. #inductionrange #appliances

@ai6yr Shortening the gas connection is DIY-able, if you're adventurous and have a few plumbing tools.

@steter @slothrop @12thRITS @ai6yr We bought a set of pans marketed specifically for induction. They're aluminum with a steel disk inside. The smaller ones work fine on the induction stove. The largest one only heats in the center and does not get all that hot. We think they used the same size disk in all of them, and in the big one it's not enough.

Other than that the induction stove is great.

@ericm @slothrop @12thRITS @ai6yr Yeah, the set with non-stick coating is like that. I guess you get the disk size you pay for. 🤷♂️

Already a major benefit, which is air quality. CO2 in the kitchen at 800, which is about what it would be with as many people/animals inside without windows open. Previously, cookies baked would push the CO2 levels on that sensor to 2500 (!!). #inductioncooking #electrification #climate
