I just read about someone posting about how they’d met a person from Malaysia who was depressed that it was too dark and cold in the summer where they were

And whose mind was utterly blown that the sun didn’t set at the same time all year round

If you’ve ever met me and you’re posting about how wild this is, that’s okay, I don’t mind

I think it’s wild when the sun set shifts by more than 10 mins in a year :)

I was telling someone from New England that the first three years I was here, I was ANGRY every morning when I awoke and

The sun wasn’t beating into my face

That I couldn’t see it, even

Always kind of cute to see people from places with seasons ask about no seasons

‘When do you have your winter vacation?’

That’s easy, in December, and we call them ‘end of the year’ school vacation, not winter

‘How do you celebrate Christmas when it’s not cold?’

(If a cold Christmas is not a thing it’s just not a thing anyone misses. My Singaporean Christian family eats noodles for Christmas)

‘How do you know when it’s a different season?’

You don’t, there are no seasons. That’s the point.

Oh, there’s monsoon and mango season. And there’s monsoon but no mango season.

You’re just used to what you’re used to.

The mangoes are amazing in that part of the world and I’m sorry most people haven’t had them (freshly picked in the right season. Many different types. All different.)

@skinnylatte a great way to start a lasting battle is to ask a group of Indians what the best mango
      Is.

@skinnylatte When we went to visit our family in the Philippines, that was the first time I ever tasted mangoes the way the universe intended them to be experienced, and it was mind-blowing. We get two varieties of mangoes in the US, and neither are very often in prime condition by the time they get to us.

maybe my equivalent would be me telling people from back home that

'out here, i've met people who don't like coconut and mango!'

i have to explain that i'm telling the truth, it's not just aliens that i've met

(coconut and mango also taste much better closer to the equator.. divine really.)

@skinnylatte I kind of have to explain this to people every now and then.

Living less than 10° north of the Equator (sometimes the explanation has to start there 😭) is fun.

      "Oh, you don't have seasons!"

Yes, we do. It's just not "winter, spring, summer and autumn". It's "dry season, rainy season, dry season, rainy season". The second rainy season is also "hurricane season" but that's changing, thankyouverymuchglobalnorthforfsckinguptheclimate.

"Why do you go to school so early?"

Because the sun rises between 5:15 am and 5:55 am. It sets at 6 pm at the latest. Solar noon (again, explain…) is around 11:30 am. It makes no sense to try to start the day "late".

"Oh, you must have fruits and crops all year long!"

Kind of. Some things don't like a lot of rain. Some things do not like no water. So, yes, we do have seasonal stuff because we do have seasons.

      "Christmas?"

      What about it?

      "Do you have it?"

Sure. Most of the country is catholic, that comes with it…

      "…"

Never mind. We do have Christmas, yes.

      "But it must be hot!"

Not really. I mean, it's not freezing, there's no snow. But everyone wears sweaters and whatnot. It is cold outside.

And yes, we switch clothing thru the year, not the same way you do, but we do.

And school break is between mid December and mid February because that used to be very hot. Thankyouagain. We even call it "summer" 🤷🏽 Now that's more a March/April thing, which lines up with Easter, so that's nice.

      "…"

Never mind, it's a catholic thing, too.

@skinnylatte Badami mango as part of our breakfast this week. @czds can only share a quarter of mango each day. Amazing. Different flavor profile from our normal Manila Mango, but they are all good.

@czds @skinnylatte yeah, we typically get types of Alphonso mango and not the Philippine carabao nor pico mangoes, but call them Manila Mango.

@jadp @czds if you find more Indian mangoes through the season, try Alphonso, banganpalli, and others. They’re sublime and very different from each other

Banganpalli is my fave. Also imam pasand

Prob available at Indian stores at diff times through the summer.

@skinnylatte Alphonso types we find almost year round, even at the local grocery, mostly from Mexico, SoCal and Florida. Interesting that Banganpalli is different from Badami, the mango we have was marketed as Badami (Baganpalli) @czds
