    I’ve been deeply curious about the anti-dietary fat fads which seem to have dominated many parts of the U.S. for a long time.

    Reading stuff like this fascinates and horrifies me

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Millennials/comments/1g3g311/anyone_else_whose_parents_got_sucked_into_the/

    Like reading or hearing someone say ‘even just having something that tastes like a little bit of fat’ is enough to make them feel revulsed.. feels like an eating disorder on a national scale.

      It’s not so dominant now but you notice it when buying milk (it’s very challenging to buy anything other than skim milk in regular grocery stores. Their full fat milk would also be low fat many other places). Their low fat yogurts are full of extreme amounts of sugar. Fat is bad, sugar is fine. The sugar lobby really did a number on this one.

      Then you meet people whose parents are utterly terrified of normal things with dietary fat

      i think just the entire idea of restricting specific ingredients or food groups, is just so weird to me (other than for like religious or aversion or allergy reasons).

      there's a lot of nutritional food campaigning in singapore / malaysia too but i feel like the messaging is more 'eat less white rice, try brown 3x a week' or 'cut sugar, ask for a little less in your tea' rather than 'if you do X you are BAD' which is... the american way

      @FranceskaMann yep they really love sugar. anywhere where there was colonial sugar plantation, the local population LOVES sugar. it's like training your colony to buy your product. that they work on.

      @skinnylatte

      In Malaysia they add sugar to fruit juice. At least they did the year I lived there. Diabetes was rampant. So I'm glad that folks are thinking about using less sugar there.

      @skinnylatte I try to follow Julia Child’s advice. Everything in moderation. Including moderation.

      @skinnylatte It's so weird to me that skim milk would be the only option in a grocery store. Maybe it's a regional thing, as whole milk (which I'll admit isn't that high in fat) is available in any grocery store I visit here - and is the type of milk I purchase as it tastes and feels nicer (less fatty options feel thin to me).

      Also goes better with coffee than any alternatives I've tried. But that's just personal preference.

      @jf_718 the safeway and trader joes here have poor options for full fat. i have to go to specialty stores to get milk that i don't hate.

      i was once talking about this with an american friend and she told me she had family members who would be utterly repulsed by ANY FOOD having ANY FLAVOR

      as in

      deep, deep fear that they were doing something 'wrong' because flavor meant fat meant bad

      this country's relationship with food is fucked
