If you’re looking for an alternative search engine now that Google is completely dead:

    Free option: DuckDuckGo “NoAI”
    Paid option: Kagi

Either have pros and cons, so it depends a bit on what you’re looking for.

Probably a good idea to read up on and try both.

@thomasfuchs Isn't Kagi also run by AI bros?

(Me, I currently default to noai.duckduckgo.com - but every now and then I also try out Qwant and Ecosia.)

@datarama DDG has AI too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Both on DDG and Kagi AI is completely optional.)

Not-so-secretly hoping that the complete and utter bullshit that Google (and so many other tech companies) are pulling right now will lead to a second golden age of the Web.

@jakob @datarama Yes, that is a big problem. I agree that a possible relief is hand-curated indexes (basically folksonomies)—possibly a layer of crowd-sourced trust on top of the index (in e.g. Kagi you can also remove or derank sites for yourself, maybe they could add curated lists that users can share or something?).

@thomasfuchs @datarama Neither can fix the problem that the index is compromised. Search is broken and I am naively hoping for reemergence of folksonomies and blog rolls and hopefully more scalable, contemporary social solutions to vetting information beyond retro-tech. One can dream...
