@shepgo @dmitriid what does a tech person do on a phone that utilizes its CPU to at least 10%? I am also a tech person on iPhone 13 and I see no reason to upgrade (ProRes is cool, fair, but I already have that)

      > Hell, I'm a tech person.

The subjective indecision of someone who claims to be sensitive to technological change is not objective proof. Someone being on the fence about a $1,000 purchase is typically a matter of personal finance, utility, or taste, rather than a lack of technical advancement in the hardware.

And still: from a technical standpoint, the jump from an iPhone 12 Pro to a 16 Pro is massive: display Hz (ProRes), chipset, speed, camera.

A tech person ought to notice.

Oh no. It's orange and it has bigger camera plateaus. It's... so different.

And the iPhone Air which is... thin I guess. Otherwise you have to go very deep into minute technical details to find a difference between it and iPhone 17 or even 17 Pro (except cameras of course). Oh wait. It has USB 2 speeds in 2026! True innovation.

iPhones have been minor upgrades for a few generations now. The kind Apple announces for Macs on a lazy Tuesday.

Most people, especially non-tech ones, would find the difference between iPhone 17 (Pro, Max) *and iPhone 14 (Pro, Max)* baffling.

The difference is basically CPU and camera upgrades many people wouldn't find interesting or worthy of hype (especially since photo quality these days is improved or ruined by software, and I've had plenty of photos ruined by iPhone's latest camera software).

Hell, I'm a tech person. And I still was very much on the fence when it came to upgrading to iPhone 16 Pro *from iPhone 12 Pro*.

@dmitriid Are you doing a bit? If you are, I have to admit, you’ve strung me along for a few years. I thought you were just an embittered crackpot, but now I’m thinking you’ve played a long prank on me.

You overplayed your hand this time, though, suggesting that the super popular orange iPhone 17 Pros, the bigger camera plateaus, and especially the iPhone Air are “indistinguishable” from past iPhones. Well-played, sir.

      > This year’s iPhone 17 lineup is arguably the best ever

As in: indistinguishable from the last 4-5 models.

Yes, Apple is bringing in tons of cash, but so does Mocrosoft. Wanna share how great Microsoft is?

Cook did to Apple what he did to logistics: made it brutally efficient while making it exactly: predictable, risk averse, extracting every penny of revenue from everyone,
brutally punishing on anyone involved in it, and bribing auhtorities whenever possible.

If you agree that Apple itself was It’s hard to imagine a more orderly, confidence-inspiring, exciting-but-not-at-all-surprising, this-feels-right way to do this.
