It’s good to see engagement and use growing here. It would be healthy to have a social platform free of the billionaire oligopoly and the corporate ad folks, don’t you think?
@georgetakei Absolutely! And it's important that it remain non-profit. I'm beginning to think we need non-profit social media in a way that's similar to why we need a robust public education option-- imagine if Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg owned all our schools. We've seen already that monetizing hate and disinformation is highly profitable.
@georgetakei Absolutely! A long-time twitter user, I simply cannot stand that app now that it's run by Space Karen. He's a troll that brings out the worst in people. I refuse to give him attention or help him make $.
@georgetakei I do. However, maintaining this spirit necessitates that the platform as a whole stay away from big money. For a long time the question has been asked, “can a free and open social platform even exist in today’s world?” And for the first time, I can begin to see that maybe, just maybe, it can. Though it’s come at great cost, with the turmoil of the last 15 years of “figuring it out.” Time will tell. Until then, we have to keep trying to do and be better.
@georgetakei If I understand Mastodon correctly then it is multiple servers that can share a "trust" between each other. If that is true then there is no one server that controls everything. That being said corporations and such can weasel their way into anything but it would be harder for them to grasp control if there is no one central point. And back to my first sentence... this is if I understand Mastodon at this time.
@georgetakei Definitely, although I am trying to boost my husbands sale of his amazing sci fi series atm. Don’t think I count as a corporate ad! ? Just an aging wife, who just found her ex soldier husband was an amazing writer! Who knew? Just trying to get it out there. Don’t really know what I’m doing, or whether anyone will see what I’m doing!
@georgetakei Captain’s Log Earth: 2022 They had hoped for a civilization that resembled the peaceful progressiveness of The United Federation of Planets.
What they got is a world filled with billionaire jerks, bearing names that sounded like those of Sith lords, hell bent on pouring their malice, greed and willingness to dominate all life into one last horcrux.
Me: So, anyone know where we can find a pair of hobbits willing to walk to a volcano and toss in some billionaire rings?
@georgetakei Agree completely. I am pleased to read that the journo.host issue on Mastodon was resolved with compassion & civil conversation. A great example of why this is a much better platform for users. ( I stumbled across it as I was searching for a journalist I followed on the bird site)
@georgetakei True. As Mark Cuban said.. Twitter is a content aggregator. As Mastodon gains content… Twitter will fall back and/or rely increasingly on grasping at whatever will drive engagement which is not unlike political parties which stoke the flames and hit the hot button issues to get people motivated. Hopefully this site remains true to content and community.
@georgetakei very much so ? I ha e been a le to interact with people on here and NOT be attacked, which is honestly a breath of fresh air. I'm loving the positivity and lack of hatred on here.
@georgetakei Real discussion, and something I've been wondering with this Elon saga. We're all likely here for similar reasons echoed in this post. My family picked up our Tesla this weekend and it has been a strange dichotomy. I do not know half the story, I'm sure, but from afar, this particular billionaire has the right mix of uncompromising ego and climate priorities to do amazing things. This same skill might draw enough blood from the stone to make Twitter profitable for a time. 1/3
please remember, some of us joined the 'verse long before Mastodon even existed I first joined in ~2010 and I was 2 years late https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse
@georgetakei yes! You actually were my inspiration to switch! I am an Infectious Disease peep. I was exhausted by trolls. Now I have found my people! Intelligent discourse is so nice ?
