    I unfollowed someone who called himself a professor because he wrote “should of."

      @lydialurch @lisamelton

      Speaking as one who somehow ended up being called a “professor,” I feel for them. My inner prescriptivist, my inner descriptivist, and my never-ending parade of “Was that autocorrect or a brain fart??” moments are locked in eternal bloody combat.

      Ha, perhaps surprisingly for a computer scientist, I will staunchly defend “more unique” as meaning ”differing from all others by a greater degree or in more dimensions.” But pet peeves are of course not obliged to be rational! (Mine is “nucular” for “nuclear.”)

      @ShiitakeToast @inthehands @lisamelton Of course. I normally give human frailty a lot of slack, but this one had already annoyed me with a bad take. The grammar was just the final straw.

      @lisamelton @lydialurch @inthehands I get that, too! Or even if it’s the first time but the interaction crosses a line.
      For me, it’s “very unique”. Something is either unique or it isn’t. There’s no modifying the amplitude of uniqueness. (Truly unique is different because you’re specifying that you mean that it is one of a kind, not just hyperbole). You know, if you assume people say things to mean things.

      @Bette @inthehands @ShiitakeToast @lisamelton That’s (the first one) a typo I’m guilty of making before, to my embarrassment. The second is inexcusable. I also hate “alot” and I’ve been seeing it more often lately.

      @inthehands @ShiitakeToast @lisamelton Both of those make my jaw tighten, but not as much as expecially does. 😅

      For me, it's when people use "it's" to show possession. Drives me up the flippin' wall. Or, even worse, its'... argggghhh! The word "it" NEVER takes an apostrophe unless one means "it is" (or in some cases for "it has", as in "it's been done before").
