Blocking tags.pub, as it seems to be by the same gut who keeps telling everyone that the fediverse needs more AI. Which it doesn't.

But taking that stance erodes trust. The kind of trust that's needed to make tags.pub work.

@dalias @xgranade I don't really understand the goal anyway. The fediverse is decentralized by design, a single server for any purpose shouldn't be the go-to solution

@aburka @xgranade And the way hashtags don't go global is all that's preventing them from being a giant spam vector.

Really, hashtags are just a bad idea to begin with though. It's so frustrating that growth hackers keep trying to push them rather than just encouraging people to build and share trusted circles who toot about the things they want to see.

@dalias @xgranade I wouldn't go that far, I like them for coordinating groups (biased as I am as a monster movie enjoyer) and for discovering people interested in a topic, whether that's bootstrapping a new empty feed or investigating a new interest

kind of agree about the global spam issue though

@aburka @xgranade I think hashtags are reasonable for initial search but not to follow. Following them surrenders your agency over whose messages you expose yourself to daily in a similar way to how capitalist social media's recommendation-engine home feeds do.

@aburka @xgranade It's less bad on fedi (provided you're not on a flagship instance) with only hashtagged messages that already federated to your instance reaching you, since they're somewhat curated by people with likely-similar values. But efforts to make hashtags reach more globally undermine that.

@dalias @xgranade yeah it's a weird balance (dependent on instance size as well) between (A) the tagged posts that reach me are in some sense "vetted" because they reached my instance through someone's subscription, but (B) also I sometimes want to use them to discover unknown-to-me accounts
