What I don't understand about the rush to SMR nuclear reactors: Why not adopt already existing naval nuclear reactors and their designs? Is it that they use up to 90% enriched fission material whereas civilian reactors only use 5% to 20%? So, although naval reactors use weapons-grade nuclear material, they come with the advantage that they can be shut down and powered up in seconds which could make them appropriate to balance the volatility of renewables in the grid.
