If you were in a place where you felt internet connectivity could be cut, by government or natural disaster etc., and you wanted to prepare in advance to maintain some kind of connectivity in that scenario, what would you do?

I was just looking at satellite internet services (other than Starlink). You need to buy a receiver, establish a line of sight to the right part of the sky, and pay a hefty monthly fee - when you'd only actually need it once every few years or less 🤔

@tokyo_0 Would you also expect voice calling would be cut under same circumstances? Tunneling data over voice to an offsite location where you expect internet uplink to be reliable is a viable approach in that case.

@lispi314 @tokyo_0 That answer is from 2014, way before VoLTE, when cellular voice quality was awful. I would expect it to work a lot better now.

@dalias @tokyo_0 These days I would expect so.

It is worth noting that the lossy compression used by modern cellular communications makes modem tunneling difficult.
