     Back in the days before imap, when email storage was a bit precious, I set up a while true loop to send emails to a friend. It only ran for a few seconds, but absolutely obliterated their inbox.

     had a friend who was a sysadmin at DEC. his voicemail was always full and the greeting was:

     "i know my voicemail is full. i don't check it. if you need me to do something, send me email. if the reason you're calling is because email isn't working, i already know about it and am working on it."

     when i was a sysadmin at a large ISP. our most reliable mail server monitor was just a window with a "tail -f" of the mail log. if it ever stopped scrolling rapidly, there was a problem.
