@i that's not a good reason, all the platforms that matter support it. they included other features that don't work everywhere

@Inginsub not enough platforms support it, so it can't be included in the baseline

@Inginsub did they have poor performance or was that just geometry shaders?

@RustyCrab just geometry shaders, i think tessellation always sucked on amd cards though

@Inginsub @RustyCrab the story goes that AMD was the one who introduced tessellation with a certain methodology, then Nvidia put an invisible tessellated ocean in one gameworks game that only tanked performance on AMD cards and the word spread from there. Going purely from memory, some details may be wrong.

@benis_redux @RustyCrab crysis 2 or 3, crytek added heavy tessellation to everything and nvidia cards handled tessellating flat surfaces with no deformation better

@benis_redux @RustyCrab @i yeah, i was about to post that. the ocean was under the map and not literally invisible, and the cause was likely the difference in how pre-occlusion worked on nvidia and amd cards from that time

Crysis 2 Tessellation: Too Much of a Good Thing?
        from @scottwasson
The Crysis 2 DX11 patch adds stunning visuals—but also baffling inefficiencies that strain GPUs and raise questions about developer intent.

      >Then, in late June, Crytek and publisher EA unloaded a massive, PC-specific update to Crysis 2 in three parts: a patch to version 1.9 of the game weighing in at 136MB, a 545MB patch adding DirectX 11 support, and a hulking 1.65GB archive containing high-res textures for the game.
