East Oakland / San Leandro Mexican food adventure:
First stop is El Borreguito Michoacano
It’s not even on the map! Excellent barbacoa

Next stop: one of the most respected Al pastor vendors
Tacos Al Pastor Estilo Puebla
@onekind @motoridersd I will come with if you want company
@motoridersd @skinnylatte ohhhh my god that sounds incredible! I need to go visit my friend Ann in Chiapas and Puebla is practically next door on Australian terms — only 8h drive!
@onekind @skinnylatte and Puebla is where it originated, then spreading to the rest of the country. I myself prefer the central or southern style preparation, in northeast Mexico they like a dryer rub that doesn't work as well for me.
In Puebla you can find pita bread stuffed with al pastor meat with a tahini based sauce and it's delicious. They're usually called Tacos Árabes
@skinnylatte Do you know the story that tacos al pastor is the Mexican take on the Lebanese shawarma? I love it as a reminder that migration and cultural exchange is massively multiplex not just people from LMICs trying to get Green Cards.
Next stop: super useful that there are like 20 amazing taco stands in the same place. Next to al pastor place, we also tried Tacos Al Vapor
Steamed tacos, I adore them and will always have one when I see a tacos al vapor placd
I can’t believe I exist in the same timeline as amazing tacos
@onekind in California there is a saying that the ‘border crossed us’: most of this was Mexico originally including the people here
@skinnylatte You are most of the tacos on my timeline.
If I should dream of moving to the East Bay to wander the streets with a camera, a taco guide map, and an electric folding bicycle, you will have something to do with that.
(Currently my dream is more like "wander the neighborhoods of San Francisco with a pair of good walking shoes.")
Quick Yemeni coffee break at Sana’a Coffee then more tacos (2 more spots)
@jmeowmeow I should make a taco map
Next taco stop is in someone’s house. This is gonna be amazing
Oh man it’s amazing
El Tacostao
@scott multiple spots in Oakland. Even San Rafael
@skinnylatte I didn't know Sana'a was in Oakland!
@skinnylatte How did you find these places? Do you have a guide?
@Kathryn934 asking friends, reading reviews, just trying everything
Basically if there is a no name, not on the map, cluster of food stalls in east Oakland and San Leandro, I will make it a point to try it.
Last time I did that I found an incredible Colombian bbq spot on the street in a parking lot (also not on the map)
Just passed La Parilla Loca, which is a fave in this area but not going there today in order to try one last new place
Last place: back of a Mexican grocery store burrito and taco spot
Getting stuff to go because I am taco-ed out but need to know how good it is
This concludes my east bay taco crawl.
