@jens @reiayanami My reading of the intent is that being a hermit and refusing to engage with society because capitalism does nothing to dismantle capitalism or benefit the people harmed by capitalism who lack the option to opt out.

That one should not feel guilty about living in society and doing things needed to have agency and be able to effect change in that society. Only about gratuitous extravagance and gratuitously picking the ethically worse option when multiple options are available.

@reiayanami The phrase was never meant as an excuse, really?

'There is no ethical consumption under capitalism' doesnt mean you should go out looking for a billionaire's arsehole to lick. It means that under capitalism, it is impossible to fully remove violations in the supply chain. It does not mean that a coffee you bought from Starbucks is the same as the locally grown coffee being sold by a struggling farmer who doesnt even own the lands he planted them in. Now, both may have environmental implications, but one definitely has a long history of child labour and union busting.

'There is no ethical consumption under capitalism' is not an excuse for you to continue supporting causes and businesses because 'nothing changes anyway'. If what you really want is to continue supporting businesses like that, just fucking own it and not hide behind sentences like this.
