I really WANT to love my @furilabs FLX1, but I can't. Constant Out of Memory errors, my calendars are broken YET AGAIN - thankfully that appointment texted me a reminder, and having to hunt for public wifi when I'm out because cell data rarely works without issue... No, I don't really enjoy living with this phone.

I'm done with phones. As soon as I can afford it, I'm getting a UMPC. A little tiny x86-64 machine to carry around.

I don't have some niche weird calendar. It's just a NextCloud account that syncs on literally everything else I have. It synced with Android with 0 issue, it syncs on all my Linux laptops - Using Kontact or Evolution or the PIM add on.... Ah, there missing on this laptop cause I forgot to enable it. Boop, there's my appointments, easy peasy.

On my FLX1... CONSTANT sync failures. Or like what it's doing now where I can't even save an appointment. It acts like it does, and just eats it.

This fucking brick is absolutely maddening! Oh, but can it PHONE? ...yeah, half the time it just makes a squeal noise when I dial out.

This god damn thing is so memory starved that if I scroll mastodon, and click a link to an article someone posted, it'll OOM about 50% of the time.

Terminal works well. That's what it's good at, terminal. Not TUI, don't use a TUI.

I don't ask a lot from my phone. I don't care if it plays games.
I just want to mindlessly scroll Mastodon, look stuff up on duckduck, and have my calendars. That's the bulk of what I do on it. When I go out, I need GPS... but for some reason, the last few times, I can have EITHER the map OR the blue line to follow, not both. Why? Who the fuck knows, it's probably out of memory!

@hellomiakoda The FLX1 runs it’s own operating system, right? It sounds like most of your problems are software related.

My daily driver smartphone is a Fairphone 5 which runs stock Android, I would never screw with the operating system on the cell phone that I depend on to make calls or keep my calendar up to date. That shit needs to be as reliable as possible, and me screwing around with the OS would definitely cause reliability issues.

I would, however, buy a second smartphone that I did not depend on and use it to play around with other operating systems. Sounds to me like your FLX1 might be a good candidate for screwing around with (e.g. Mobian, Graphene, Postmarket, etc.), once you replace it with a more reliable cell phone.

@hellomiakoda True, and so is iOS. But there are no reliable free-software phone operating systems.

So basically, your phone has to spy on you, or you have to use no smartphone ever. (Fuck capitalism.)

@madengineering What I want to know is why my ThinkPad runs fine with god knows how many tabs, Kontact, a music player, telegram, Tokodon, NextCloud sync, and some shit I forgot to close on 8GB of RAM, but the phone can't do squat on 6GB. What, do I have one thing that's 6.5GB and the rest all fits in the other 1.5? I doubt it.

@hellomiakoda Oom isn't exactly the smartest process, and although it's a bit anthropomorphic to describe it this way, I think of it as the computer looking at ram supplies, having a panic attack, grabbing one if the tasks and chucking it out the window to resolve the situation.

And of course by Murphy's law, it'll pick the task you least wanted interrupted.

@ramin_hal9001 One thing though... These are gnome apps. If I put Gnome on my laptop, and stick my calendar in there, it'll work. Those apps work. They just don't work on the FLX1.

@ramin_hal9001 Either a dumb phone with hotspot, or... the little computer I have my eye on has a SIM slot. I just hope that works in Linux. I know the machine does, as I've seen YT videos of people doing so. Just... nobody pointing out if that cell modem does.

      @hellomiakoda yeah, good call.

My in-laws have a WiFi-over-5G thingy. You could maybe get something like that if you really wanted to connect your laptop to the cell network, and SIP over WiFi.

@ramin_hal9001 Well, whatever it is, it's not the daily driver they insisted it is. They INSIST it's daily drivable. They have a different definition of daily driver than I do.
Calendar is VERY high on my daily driver list. ...and syncing a calendar is something I've been doing since... fuck my god damn Pocket PC PDA synced a calendar.

@hellomiakoda yeah, the FLX1 seems to have a weird build of Linux. I wonder if they are trying to do something clever, like build Alpine with Musl Libc, or maybe they are using DirectFB instead of Walyand, which is why it might be so screwy? I have no idea.

@hellomiakoda Android does some weird things with memory, like running all apps at all times, so they're always using memory even when they're not officially "running'.

That or somebody made a dumb mistake programming one of those apps and there's a memory leak where it keeps reserving more and more memory for itself only to forget to give it back when it's done.

Wish I could do more to help.
