🇭🇺 Orbán: There were two world wars, and we were drawn into both despite wanting to stay out.

The lesson of history is clear: István Tisza failed, Miklós Horthy failed. The real question is whether we can succeed.

I believe we can, by shaping our foreign policy so that Hungary stays out of war.

Hungary wasn’t exactly “dragged” into WW1. Prime Minister Tisza initially opposed the war, worried about weakening Hungarian dominance and setting off a major European conflict. He later received assurances (no annexation of Serbia and protection of Hungarian political interests) and signed off anyway. After that, Austria-Hungary issued the ultimatum to Serbia, and Europe headed into its bloodiest war to that point.

So, Hungary was a reluctant but consenting partner.

@MAKS23 "Hungarian politics and foreign policy had become more stridently nationalistic by 1938, and Hungary adopted an irredentist policy similar to Germany's, attempting to incorporate ethnic Hungarian areas in neighboring countries into Hungary. On November 20, 1940, Hungary became the fourth member to join the Axis powers when it signed the Tripartite Pact."
