Man, nerves are just shot in Minneapolis right now. Everyone is on edge and frayed. Sightings are flying, rumors are flying, facts are flying. Feels like things are teetering. Everyone is working so hard to hold the community together, but I’m really worried that something is going to break.

If ICE gave even half a damn about actual safety, they’d have backed off for a few days to let things cool. Instead, they’re coming on hotter than ever. Just everywhere. Doubling down.

They’re casing daycares now, for god’s sake. I know personally of at least one preschool teacher who was abducted.

ICE is really hoping this whole town blows, trying to make it happen.

I think they underestimate us. The Twin Cities have layers of care and community these pathetic little people can’t even begin to imagine.

I’m still worried. They’re going to drag us through hell trying to make things explode. And folks in positions of leadership here damn well better make sure the folks on the streets believe that somebody’s doing something.

@inthehands this kind of thing has never happened in Malaysia before. Not even when we had protests against the government. This truly feels gestapo like. Is there any reason why your local forces can't chase them out?

General strike is still a distant fantasy at this point, but the appetite for large and more dramatic action from the general population has increased by another order of magnitude since Wed. People are not sitting still here.

@inthehands daycare refusal to take kids and #generalstrike are cousins, along with schools going remote only. Hilton may have to have managers start cleaning rooms

      @liztai
      It’s complicated.

Our “local forces” are the Minneapolis Police. You may have heard of them, from, oh, say, the year 2020. They are at best useless, at worst ICE-friendly (if legally barred from overtly assisting them).

The Minnesota National Guard, who are much better, have been put on notice that they may have to mobilize. However, that is almost certainly in case of widespread civil unrest, not to remove ICE. To have MN NG directly confront ICE wouldn’t just mean chasing ICE out; it would mean an armed standoff between the Minnesota State and US Federal governments, which is…well, beyond uncharted. We might end up there, but there’s no simple “can’t you just” here.

@inthehands They want civil war as revenge for 2020.

      White grievance.

Plus the 🤡 wants civil war so he can officially crown himself king and emperor.

American media wants it. Big ratings. Big profits from commercials for cars, pharmaceuticals and Budweiser.

I think it’s (still) revenge for 2008. Having a Black person president for even 5 minutes was the end of some people’s whole world.

@inthehands Very best of luck to the Twin Cities in braving this storm, and your tactical analysis seems spot-on. All of us will learn and plan, as it gets worse.

I have been thinking lately about my family in Norway during the occupation, where one response was called the “ice front”: occupying soldiers, officials, and sympathizers were shunned to the extent of acting as if the had not spoken. Humor was used to signal the invaders being unwelcome, samizdat press kept spirits high, and symbols such as the “seven” sign referring to undefeated King Haakon 7, were common.

It is past time America does likewise. It is time to learn from our Norwegian bestemors (grandmothers).

Your description of the “ice front” reminds me of this remark, which is so so true:

@inthehands thank you for all your reporting, the clear insights and the compassion.
In the last few years you gave me a window into a part of US that I would never have dreamed of finding in normal media (me being all the way half around the world in Bremen, Germany).
I fear for you guys, but the common sense and the kindness and community spirit you transport give me hope.
Stay strong together, stay peaceful. Don't give them the violence they want to provoke.
