Setting up the basics of turning lights on and off is easy in #HomeAssistant.
Finding and unlocking all it CAN do is a never ending journey.

Don't let it scare you. Make a back up, and try your "crazy idea". It's fun, I promise.
Maybe not while getting it to do the thing you want, but the successes are fun and worth it.

...and if you fuck it all up, just restore from back up.

@jamie I use that method too for more complicated ones. I just disable the extra one

@hellomiakoda Great advice. To add to this, duplicates of automations and the like can be made as well. If there is an automation I intend to change, I’ll duplicate it first and add a version number at the end (v2, v3 etc.). Then work on the new one whilst the original stays in tact.

I also find using an “Archive” category to put old automations in is a great way to keep the list tidy without the need to delete them.

@ktneely I started with what I had, coming from a mish mash, to Google Home (before it became Nest), and then finally Home Assistant when I dropped Google. So, there are still mish mashy bits all over the place (though I finally gave up having to re-auth Wiz and just binned the damn bulb. As things die though, I've been replacing with Zigbee. Less load on the wifi, faster, easier in HA, and... they still work when the internet is down.

@hellomiakoda awesome advice. When I'm done with my Kubernetes set up, running #HomeAssistant and migrating my few devices over is my next step. I've just been scared of it because I hear it is never-ending tweaking, but I've only purchased devices that would work with it for the inevitable switch over.
