argued very slightly with someone making a overtly venomous post about happy holidays just being capitalist and not about hatred of christmas, whereupon the person lashed back and makes it very clear that for them it really was about hatred of christmas lol. I wasn't even trying to get their goat, they just couldn't conceal the hate for more than a minute it took to make the original post.

@toiletpaper @sun @zaitcev I'm sorry this has been your experience. I've met many people of different faiths over many years and never encountered anything but goodwill. Perhaps I've been lucky.
But that doesn't dismiss your experience. I'm sure you've considered that those who know you are not Christian still want to wish you well and saying Merry Christmas is a default, rather than a deliberate slap in the face. Only you can judge the intention in the moment, so I cannot comment on each interaction. Perhaps you might limit your interactions with people you believe to be deliberately upsetting you. It's ok to to have boundaries and cut out people that you don't feel happy around.
How people choose to greet each other should still be a personal choice. I do not like compelled speech, so I wouldn't wish to make demands of others.
May I take this opportunity to wish you well now and in 2026 without denigrating your sincerely held beliefs. You may insert your own greeting that doesn't offend you as I wouldn't wish to be accused of using words that cause you to reply *get fucked* (but of course you are free to use those words as you see fit).
      All best.

In the case of "Merry Christmas" specifically, I think it comes down to the fact that Christinanity has a nearly 2,000 year long track record of being forcibly shoved down everyone's throat, and coopting if not erasing other people's celebrations in the process. If narcissism were a religion, that's what it would look like.

      > I like to know what I or others are celebrating, and if it's something I don't know about, then it's a good opportunity to find out.

Yeah. Agreed. I go out of my way as much as possible to find out and offer well wishes to my friends and acquaintances which are appropriate to their own minority religions and cultures. It's a matter of respect. In researching many of those festivities I've been amazed to find historical threads which demonstrate their mutual influence with the more mainstream culture. A good example in particular are Persian celebrations like Shab e Yalda and Nowruz, particularly in light of the post Gregorian swap of the date of the New Year.

What pisses me off in particular is when people are well aware that I don't practice Christinanity, but go out of their way to wish me a "Merry Christmas" anyway (it's frankly always Christians who do it). It's just a slap in the face, and I take it as such. It's certainly not earning them any reciprocal tolerance nor respect. If they wished me a Happy Holiday, or Happy Solstice, then I'd be far more inclined to wish them Merry Christmas in response, instead of telling them to get fucked as is my knee-jerk instinct.

No. It's about respecting that not everyone practices Christinanity, but most still celebrate the time of the Solstice regardless. If your intent is to express good will to your fellow man, then "Happy Holidays" is good enough to get the point across with sincerity. If your intent is to shove Christinanity down everyone's throat, then fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

@toiletpaper @zaitcev @sun I personally see no problem with wishing anyone a happy anything. If a stranger out and about wished me a happy (whatever) then I would take it in the spirit it was intended, even if it were a festival I didn't celebrate, and reply in kind. I would take it as a compliment that they wanted to share the joy.
If people want to use a generic Happy Holidays, then that's a personal choice. I like to know what I or others are celebrating, and if it's something I don't know about, then it's a good opportunity to find out. I wouldn't take it as *shoving it down my throat* but perhaps I know and meet mostly nice people - lucky me.
I wonder if the fragmentation of society has been engineered to keep us all at each other's throats by emphasising differences in a negative way.
