    @Truck You misunderstood what I mean by "us".

    By "us", I mean FOSS ecosystem. Currently, we don't have options for a type of person I described couple of messages earlier, not really. And the vast majority of peope on the planet is exactly that type of person: between everything that's going on in their lives almost nobody wants to learn intricate Inner workings of an OS also so they don't accidentally break it.

    This is one of the reasons why we keep losing desktop. We insist on people shaping themselves around our products instead of shaping products around people.

      @lritter @drq @Truck Nah, getting to the core of it: I think immutable is the kind of thing that contaminates FOSS spaces with gigantic blobs that nobody dares to look into and in the end can't rebuild, because it's expressly intended to not be tinkered with by anyone else.

      Docker containers are the prime example of this but are sadly not alone.

      Meanwhile I've been wishing since ~2008 for Linux distros to get their head out of their ass and adopt things like snapshots with proper system integration.
      Something which OpenSolaris showcased and AFAIK macOS also integrated ages ago.

      @drq @Truck @lanodan are we losing? i didn't notice.

      but my position is this: more options in the OSS space are always better.

      @lritter @Truck @drq And one of the reason for the snapshot thing is also important is that if we ever want to provide an alternative to the cloud (basically Google Drive), we need to have backups be at least as well integrated as stuff like Time Machine.

      (It's also why 90% of self-hosting attempts do not work past the first incident, even ready-made stuff ignores backups)

      Sadly I'm not, the amount of new software being actually rebuildable is getting lower and lower, check the new packages distros managed to add in the past few years compared to the Linux software you hear about.

      And for the most part it's no the distros being gatekeepy (Debian is pretty much alone in this), it's devs tailoring only to docker & flatpak as the only way to deal with their software.

      @lanodan @Truck @drq "contaminates"? it's hardly this dramatic. you'll survive it.

      and what you wish for should also exist.
