     @RealGene This looks like an app rendering links that aren't using the Mastodon quoting system as quotes, not like the standard Mastodon web ui.

     @Two9A That's how you just make a new post quoting a post, but what I'm trying to figure out is how you quote a post in a reply to an existing post. Which is where a large part of the usefulness of quotes lies.

     @Two9A My own personal use case for quotes is mostly replying to someone saying "here, this past toot [by me or someone else] is highly relevant to the topic/has the answers you're looking for/etc."

     @dalias Flipping through the ActivityPub spec, there's no proscription on having both `inReplyTo` and `quote` on a status, so it seems very possible (though @thisismissem may be able to confirm) to reply with a quote toot.

     It just looks like it's not (yet?) been exposed by Mastodon as a thing you can do.

     @Two9A @thisismissem Yeah, I'm aware the data model is supposed to support it. Just don't know how to actually do it. Can third-party clients do it now by submitting such a post?

     @dalias @thisismissem As you say, it _should_ work. I have some code shiftily bolted to my blog to issue posts as AP statuses, but I won't pretend it's capable of replying to this thread...

     Might be worth an exploratory poke.

     And it worked!!! The unintuitive way to do it is actually documented here: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/quote-posts/#faq-with-reply

     You have to start replying first, then navigate to the post you want to quote, and click the quote-boost button on it. This attaches the quote to your reply!
