     @glennf @chrisphin There was a 2020 study that showed Americans would save $450 billion a year switching to universal health care.

     But US corporations use private health insurance as a principle method of coercion and control of their workers.

     And it also means that poor folks - especially the brown and black ones - would be on a level playing field with white folks.

     So it won't happen here.

     I don't think the fascists have scrubbed this one off the books. Yet.

     @flargh @chrisphin Yeah, it is the worst. Co-pay, deductible, co-insurance, and out-of-pocket. Basically means after paying more than we would in comparable income tax in a country with socialized or similar care, we then have the privilege of getting “free care.” For us, that’s $50,000 this year before tax credits and deductions. (Family of three.) The tax offsets are pretty good, but I anticipate we would pay a straight $20,000 in another economy in tax as our healthcare share…

     @glennf I don’t understand what the latter part means because I don’t understand how your insurance works, but ‘heart surgery for free’ sounds good :)

     @chrisphin @glennf we pay "deductibles" - out of pocket expenses our insurance providers make us pay before they'll cover the bill. Most of them reset in January.

     I've scheduled a minor procedure for this month precisely to avoid being hit with a huge bill come January, which was my other option.

     @chrisphin my health is not your burden, but I appreciate the kindness! I’m thinking of you, with whatever you are coping with!

     Fortunately, a lot of people bought books and I had a very busy October and early November with consulting, and also hit my annual out-of-pocket limit on insurance so I got heart surgery for free!

     As I ratchet myself back into physical and mental capability, my spouse is helping me pack books and get them in the mail! It’s a team effort.
