@dragonarchitect seeing "FreeCAD" in the list is amusing to me because i found it so unusable for basic tasks that i spent five years and upwards of $15k of my own cash making an alternative CAD a reality

@whitequark My list of (close enough to be) flawless OSS applications includes (but is not limited to):
      - KeePassXC
      - Notepad++
      - vim (RIP Bram Moolenaar 😔)
      - OBS Studio
      - OpenRCT2
      - Krita
      - FreeCAD
      - KiCAD
      - Python. *Especially* Python.

@dragonarchitect back when i started working with it the solution for making an assembly was "manually enter the coordinates"

that wasn't what pushed me over the edge though. it was when it crashed and corrupted the savefile 2nd or 3rd time in a row, completely destroying my work. unforgivable; i haven't touched it since

@whitequark After the third time AutoDesk burned me in my life I was like "Nah fuck this. Thrice you make a fool out of me." and I broke the cycle of capitalism abuse and forced myself to learn enough of FreeCAD to start doing at least some slightly more than basic stuff.

I've not yet seriously poked at it after 1.0 dropped, though. I know there's been some workflow changes, UX overhauls, and the TNP finally got fixed in the main branch after carefully merging RealThunder's codebase in.

@whitequark I've... never had that problem at all. o.O The crashing or file corruption, that is.

@whitequark started writing a list in replies and yeah, i think i'd need a whole day to remember and thank every project that i depend on daily (let alone each person).

soo when is it exactly and what's the hashtag? :blobcatupsidedown:

the paradox is that the better the tool is, the more invisible the developer becomes, flawless tools don't get issues often

this actually highlights one of my central frustrations with OSS. basically, i write code that is _too good_ consider: if not for an issue that is the result of a very specific coincidence, i would have never learned that a *fully effort-justifying* outcome has actually happened. i basically only learn that people enjoy my software when they come to complain about it, which is rarely

next time, sprinkle in an easy-to-fix bug just to remind them you exist, you know, for "user engagement" (one shouldn't) jk
