So rare to see anyone talking at all about Indonesian food outside of Java and Bali, so I was very happy to see this video about the food of Sulawesi (you’re highly unlikely to get this anywhere outside of Sulawesi. And maybe a couple of restaurants in Jakarta)
The further east in Indonesia the food is, the more likely I am to love it. The food of Madurai, Surabaya,. All of Sulawesi.. also the tribal foods of NTT (I’ve never been but every single NTT restaurant I’ve been to in Jakarta and Surabaya has been a hit for me). Of course I can’t get any of this outside of Indonesia so I’ll have to go back ASAP
I almost never go to any Indonesian restaurant outside of Indonesia / Singapore / Malaysia / Australia because everywhere else.. a basic gado-gado is super exotic
My favorite Indonesian restaurant in California is Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine in Alhambra.
They have pempek, real good satay (everywhere that claims to do satay but does sad unseasoned chicken breast needs to not call itself satay), and the best char kway teow (kway teow goreng) here (Curry Leaves bistro in Pleasanton has my second fave)
@skinnylatte have you ever had Ghanese shito? It's a pepper paste that I think includes both fish and shrimp. It's basically a flavor bomb. My wife ordered delivery a while back and we loved it but she can't remember where she got it from. 😭 There aren't any explicitly Ghanese restaurants around us, but there are a bunch of pan-African places.
