>this_that.jpg
if you double-click on "this_that", in Windows Explorer it selects the entire filename
in MacOS Finder, it just selects "this_that"
>this is the way
cursor at the beginning, ctrl-shift right arrow selects "this " including the space in Windows
MacOS it just selects "this"
this has been going on for fucking ever
the Windows way is maximum-retarded, whatever it's doing is rarely what i want it to be doing
civil war now

@WandererUber @JoshuaSlocum if you click, pause, click it will just select the non extension part of the filename. It's been that way for a long time.

@WandererUber @JoshuaSlocum if you can trust microsoft to do anything, it's certainly make things worse.

@sickburnbro @JoshuaSlocum Don't you worry, Redmond had a jeet rewrite Explorer for Windows 11 and now they're hot on their tail

@WandererUber @JoshuaSlocum also finder is possibly the worst file management software in the history of the world, and that means something.

i'm just extremely correct about this one particular thing

@sickburnbro @WandererUber the point is how the UI handles text selection expansion, and the windows way is the wrong way
considering i've worked in both environments in equal parts for decades now, my opinion is rock solid gold and any other opinion is nigger

@JoshuaSlocum @sickburnbro @ACL9000 My feelings on iTunes was that it was the worst music manager...except for all the others.

@sickburnbro @ACL9000 funny thing about that, itunes used to be so good it converted people to mac
the penny arcade homos did a comic about it way back
granted this was when itunes was basically just rebadged soundjam

@JoshuaSlocum @nach @WandererUber the linux people have an excuse because it's all free poorfag shit. Apple should be beaten to death for having a billion dollars and continuing to serve up that trash file manager. I shoot myself in the head every time I have to use it on a mac. It's like, jesus who put 1985 in the screen

@EvilSandmich @JoshuaSlocum @ACL9000 also, it wasn't itunes that converted them, it was the ipod.

@EvilSandmich @JoshuaSlocum @ACL9000 I think it may have started out that way, but they refused to fix it after it was a "send things to your ipod" application

@JoshuaSlocum @WandererUber gotcha, why are you renaming files like that often enough that this makes you that angry?
-
Embed this notice
@sickburnbro @WandererUber it's "this_that.jpg"
pushing the selection expansion to include the extension is maximum retard, because if you change the extension in windows this changes the nature of the file
so take a long ass file name
"12345 - This File has versions (v22)_With-important-shit.pdf"
you're renaming it, so you double-click "versions", this actually selects "versions ", with a space
all you want to do is change "versions" to "nigger", but now you also have to type a space because it expanded the selection
if you select and drag towards the end of the filename, when you get to the period, it will leap over and include the extension
nobody wants to do this
nobody has ever wanted to do this
windows knows this, so if you accidentally overwrite the extension it helpfully pops up a warning dialog: "You're about to change the type of file, this will rain nuclear fire down on widows and orphans and cute little kittens, are you sure you want to do this?"
and then it helpfully defaults to "Yes"
this is deeply, frightfully, astonishingly retarded
that people will *defend* this behavior is just lmao
