the thing that i really hate is that not so long from now, the main way to prove that "you are human" would be to prove that you have an (unique) bank account

payment processors and banks already have way too much power over our lives, and it's about to get so much worse

(the other option is "digital ID" but i think that stuff is just not standardized enough for it to happen quickly. banks though? sure are)

@whitequark I bet you could have a very effective captcha nowadays that just asked "how many R's are in the word strawberry?"

@whitequark And even if Digital ID were standardized enough, we should reject that because we want to retain anonymous usage where possible.

@whitequark isn't the purpose of the test to determine if someone's human?

@whitequark captcha tests should be more like "which of these persons healthcare should be stripped away?" and regardless of who you pick, you fail the test

@deshipu because it's cheap enough to deny access to those who don't that I can plausibly see this happening

@deshipu this is already de-facto happening (ask any tor user what they think of cloudflare and then look at what the workaround is), just not at a massive scale yet. but it's very much headed that way

@whitequark @Nerdfest how would you have a system that didn't give somebody obscene power to abuse? maybe it's just a misguided path down the tech tree that maybe we shouldn't be on
