I urge people to not give their DNA to corporations. Once the corporation goes into receivership, the Nazis will buy your DNA data. Your entire family, including people you've never met, will become fodder for their racial animus, and will be targeted.

Please stop. Use your heads. Fascism isn't a fun game.

@steter having just posted that I did 23 and Me in the past (I said recent but it wasn't), I can't boost this enough. I had very personal reasons to do it, and deleted the data immediately afterwards but I don't trust them to have deleted the data and now, years later, I regret the decision.

@rooster I would hope they did as you asked. It's my opinion that they have financial reasons to exhibit better ethics than any entity with enough money to buy one of them would.

@steter I didn't even get the closure I had hoped for things that have followed me my whole life.

I work close to the top of the genomics group in a biopharma you've definitely heard of.
When a leading public genetics co first showed signs of distress we signed a MoU and had a look at what they were offering.
Our legal group came back a few weeks later saying, "absolutely not."
Their reasoning was that owning that data was an insane liability and frankly dangerous to even use given the quality of the consents involved.
Maybe some other org will be unethical and dumb enough

@mast0d0nphan You share many genes. They can be used to trace ancestry. Familial DNA has been used in forensics to rule in/out suspects. It's not pointing an arrow at your location, but it provides a template for who is related. Any time your DNA is collected and matched against others, your close familial DNA would likely stand out.

@steter So hypothetically, if a close relative of mine does this test, does this expose my own DNA profile despite not having done the test at all?

Another, perhaps a more immediate threat is denial of health care (insurance or access) if you gave genetic risk of certain diseases.

Of course, combining homicidal greed with eugenics is frighteningly possible - "no person with sickle cell genes can buy health insurance".

Or an employer moving union organisers vulnerable to post acute infection syndromes (PAIS) into customer facing roles in unventilated rooms.

@steter I've been saying this it started. Do I want to know where my genetics come from around the world. Of course. Do I want someone, that I pay, to own my DNA?

WHY WOULD I PAY SOMEONE TO OWN WHAT IS MINE?

And certain hereditary conditions are more or less probable in given familial lines so just like a doctor might ask if your family has a history of a disease, an insurance company might use the familial DNA to adjust actuary assessments.

@steter My 3 adult kids all thought I was nuts for not participating in the massive DNA collection schemes by 23 & Me and Ancestry. They have all submitted theirs so I'm effectively in the data base.

@PattyHanson I know of 1 close family member who did, but my cousins? Probably all of them. Great fun, this timeline.
