The (new) Steam Machine is a semi-custom desktop PC.
Marketed to a massive mainstream audience.
And it ships with Linux.
And it's now part of an entire Linux gaming ecosystem.
This is a big, big deal.
(Laptop in 2027?)

@killyourfm yes. But even if they don't produce a laptop, desktop Linux will get loads better as the Steam Machine is targeted for native games.
This is SUPER exciting. Delivering on the promise of a Steam console the right way 13 years(?) after the initial release. Valve really stuck with it!

@ryanleesipes Valve has DEFINITELY been playing the long game! This is what happens when a perfectly realized vision comes together.

@BenjaminNelan Oh no kidding!? I haven't even dug into the Frame specs yet, but that's fantastic news.

@Sh4d0w_H34rt Haha, I *knew* someone was going to ask this! It absolutely was a coincidence. I knew nothing about the hardware (aside from the long-standing rumors) or the announcement.
But it's worth mentioning that when I decided to start covering Linux at Forbes back in 2018, a week later Valve announced Proton 😂

@killyourfm was it a coincidence that you so happen to bring back "Linux For Everyone" just before this announcement?

@killyourfm I really only have a steam deck to make Linux gaming on my TV convenient. I barely ever use it as a handheld. I will definitely be swapping out my steam deck for one of these dudes.

@alisynthesis If it comes in under $450 US, they have struck gold. Where do you think it'll land?

@killyourfm exactly. And I bet it won't be much more expensive. They've got to be at least shooting for the price range of the Xbox and PlayStation.
I'm geeked. It's exactly what I've wished for since I got my steam deck. Which I absolutely love, but goddamn I miss games having good graphics 🤣

@alisynthesis I think, at least initially, that Valve lost money on every Steam Deck sold. And think about how much of THAT device is custom (plus it has a screen...)
But presenting it as a loss leader is a perfectly valid strategy, because that's more customers buying games from Steam. They might not price Steam Machine AS aggressively, but I'm betting the 512GB model comes in under $500.

@killyourfm oh man, that seems cheap, although the components are pretty much custom, so I'm not sure how much they cost. I would be fully excited about that price point, though.

@Kaesekuchen @alisynthesis That's a good callout. The economy is in a completely different state since 2022.

That seems rather cheap. USD is weak and they need head room for tariffs. $599 is my guess.

@Sh4d0w_H34rt In a few years, I'll put L4E on hiatus again, so that when I come back Valve can announce Half-Life 3.

@killyourfm unless there is any truth to the current rumors saying Half Life 3 gets released alongside the new hardware.
