    @DerekL @kibcol1049

    I think there are two reasons for the findings of that study

    1. many plug in hybrids are company leased cars and their drivers may not be motivated to charge them and drive in electric mode.

    2. apparently many types of plug-in hybrids are not capable to maintain highway speed on battery so the petrol engine needs to run much of the time.

    So a plug in hybrid may be about as good for the environment as a full EV, but it depends on the type and on how it is used.

      @TimWardCam @sibrosan @DerekL @kibcol1049 When electric cars were first rolled out, they had limited range, which is frightening in a country with large, wide-open spaces where there might not be services for 150 miles. The hybrid gave people comfort that they wouldn't be stuck somewhere unfamiliar, in need of a charge. There is no reason to manufacture them any more. I think it's MAGA pressure now.

      @sibrosan @DerekL @kibcol1049 I remain puzzled as to what's the point of a hybrid. You're carrying around two drive trains and two power sources, so it costs fuel to move the extra weight - where is the saving that makes up for that?

      @steter @sibrosan @DerekL @kibcol1049 Ah, yes, I discovered the "might not be services for 150 miles" aspect of North American motoring on Vancouver Island.

      The hire car got a puncture. It didn't come with a real spare wheel - it came with some sort of "lite" "get-you-home" half-arsed tyre.

      Which was rated for fifty miles.

      We were more than fifty miles from the nearest garage.

      @TimWardCam @sibrosan @DerekL @kibcol1049 I don't like those things. You're also not supposed to exceed 55 mph. Try that on I-5 in California, where the semi trucks will pass you at that speed. We're just miles and miles of miles and miles in a lot of places.

      @TimWardCam @steter @sibrosan @DerekL @kibcol1049 😬

      Ooph. Welcome to driving the vast distances of relatively unpopulated center of North America.

      The land is gorgeous, the weather HATES you. Suddenly, people understand driving growly, survivable, simpler things with spares, first aid kits and a survival kit for extreme weather.
