A confusion about #KDrama -- every so often there will be text in all caps, that explain a word, practice or person. For example: “GRAND PRINCE JESAN: SUPERINTENDENT OF SAONGWON”.
Are those present in the original Korean version, or are they for English viewers in the subtitles? I can’t tell and am curious about the original intended experience.

Also, every culture of course has its tropes, and what makes it to Netflix is of course filtered even more, but I have to laugh at the number of time traveling people who end up in the Joseon era. Surely for such a small space, they’d all bump into each other sometime! 🤣😂
(And also, damn, the clothing of that era is so, so pretty. As is the food porn, when they do it!)

@clacke The timing IS too quick sometimes!
I hadn’t thought about archaic words — that makes sense. It’s weird, they sometimes keep the untranslated word (like “chaehong”) in the explanation, but other times they translate it (“royal kitchen”). Feels like for the explanations, they should either always use the original word, or pick an English archaic word instead, like using “Cyċene” for kitchen. (The first option feels like a better choice, but I’m not a translator.)

@jonobie It seems the timing on Netflix's subs for this show did not receive much editing and proofviewing. The translation for the on-screen Hangul would be up for like a tenth of a second, but then someone would say something and that would immediately replace the previous subs.
My wild guess regarding the obvious explanations is that maybe a term was translated into an English self-explanatory term, but to a Korean reader, the original text might be using an archaic term.

lol, I just saw “ROYAL KITCHEN: WHERE THE ROYAL MEALS ARE PREPARED,” which strikes me as an fairly obvious description?

And, while I find the constant verbal eeking and squeaking of younger women in the dramas to be annoying, those dowager queens / dowager consorts are slaying. Sometimes literally. 😂🤣😂

@clacke Yanno, I hadn’t thought about it, but unless costume designers are ridiculous, I’ve got a well-enough tuned clothing eye to place European clothing to within 50-75 years. I don’t have that for hanboks or Korean headwear, and so without thinking about it, I’ve been assuming time travelers were going to the same small period in the Joseon. 🙃
That said, it feels like a LOT of the k-dramas on Netflix are about time traveling!
Now I want to learn about different period clothing in Korea.

@jonobie To be fair, the Joseon era spans centuries, so it won't necesssarily be so packed with time travelers. 😊
But I haven't seen many other K-dramas, this is my second or third only, and my first time-travel one. Do they all go to the early 1400s?
