@volpeon because the only thing they're actually protective of is their ad revenue
being able to see the content without the ads cuts into that revenue while the corpos are an existential threat to them so they have to give them a bone
no contradiction at all-

@novenary @volpeon yeah, it's quite why I wish people would move out of youtube, it's been like that for 10 years… -

@faoluin @novenary @volpeon Well could be Nebula or creating it if they manage to regroup together enough.
(And stuff like peertube/owncast/… is sadly just software) -

@faoluin @novenary @volpeon Which given how bussiness-y to straight up corporate youtubers became in the last ~10 years, it really ought to happen.
Random geek with basic-ass audio/video gear in a bedroom/attic is no longer the main stuff on youtube. -

@novenary @faoluin @volpeon I don't think a mass one will happen but more like slightly over the years with methods like publishing on youtube a week later or putting a clip/trailer of the whole video.
And a lot did left youtube but for twitch… which sometimes makes me feel like they just want to get scammed. -

@lanodan @faoluin @volpeon realistically mass exodus is never going to happen though, I think youtube has proven that they can get away with pretty much anything and no one will so much as lift a finger in reaction -

@novenary @faoluin @volpeon Heh, they do effectively unionize but in a corporate way: Talent agencies and media corporations.
It's just that quite a lot of them don't talk about it. -

@lanodan @faoluin @volpeon I'd say the problem is creators are unable to meaningfully unionize, and individually they can't leave because it'd be too much lost revenue from the majority of viewers being unwilling to follow them elsewhere
best we'll get is platforms like nebula and floatplane being treated as secondary, but honestly both are still kinda fishy -

@novenary @faoluin @volpeon Well I think part of the problem is they can negotiate with youtube, but on a more or less individual basis.
Like a visible one is when videos of an agency get wrongfully copyright striked it's measured in hours, for indies it's in days or never. -

@lanodan @faoluin @volpeon evidently not good enough or we wouldn't be where we are right now
