    "A federal watchdog reported Thursday that Georgia’s program requiring able-bodied adults to document low-paying work to get Medicaid has spent much more on administrative costs than on providing health care...The GAO analysis shows that from fiscal year 2021 through the second quarter of 2025, Georgia reported $54.2 million in administrative spending and $26.2 million on health care."

      @stargazersmith @bicmay The whole premise that it's cheating is stupid. Food stamps cover the groceries so they can spend that cash on something else critically needed like rent or medical needs or needs of people you're responsible for caring for.

      @bicmay
      I remember a co-worker once on a rant about allegedly seeing a person in a grocery line buying food with food stamps, yet had previously flashed a wad of cash from his pocket.

      The co-worker's conclusion was that they should eliminate food stamps. I tried to explain that the goal of food stamps was to give needy aid. There was a budget for that. Would there be cheaters in the client mix?

      Name any human endeavor that doesn't have cheaters. As the cheaters waste some of the budget meant to help, so does using some of the budget to police and catch cheaters. When the money spent on policing exceeds the cost of the cheating, it's gone too far.

      The goal after all wasn't to build a cheat-free food supplement program, but one that helped the most people. When managing such programs, it's important not to lose sight of your initial objectives.

      @bicmay @stargazersmith Except the medical supply companies pushing equipment nobody actually wanted or intends to use. But that's a different issue.

      @dalias @stargazersmith

      Yes, and no one is sitting around their parents' basement waiting for Medicaid checks. It's health insurance; it doesn't work that way. No one's getting rich off these benefits, either.
