I picked donuts because I genuinely dislike them, but I think it’s the sort of ‘who hates donuts??’ Response that maps to

What the rest of the world feels when Americans and some Europeans call some beloved foods gross. ‘Who hates X? How can you possibly?’

And just acknowledging that everyone has a different X, whether it’s donuts or fermented things or things you’ve never heard of. But know that only some people get to be loud about how other people’s food is gross.

Sometimes I like to say ‘I think donuts are gross’ here because I really want people to think long and hard about who gets to call what foods gross. There are no gross foods. There are people with grossly underdeveloped culinary knowledge and skills, which is fine, but they have no business calling other people’s food gross. It’s just such a weird lens through which to see the world, and so colonialist.

@skinnylatte To shift the subject slightly, is there any cuisine that goes completely overboard with peppermint?

@drsbaitso Trader Joe’s has a ‘herbed chicken thigh’ thing (usually next to their beloved shawarma) that is ‘peppermint and fish sauce’. Sort of universally reviled by the typical TJ’s demographic but it’s my fave thing

@drsbaitso I’ve seen it used by extensively by Vietnamese and Malaysian folks in herb salad style preparations. I don’t know that it’s excessive but it’s present (along with other herb).

@skinnylatte That certainly sounds like a unique flavor profile. I'll take a peek next time I get across town to our TJ.

I meant more broadly, like cultures (even small pockets) that were just like "we got a ton of mint and need to do something with it".

I really want the other end of the "you will taste this spicy thing all the way through your asshole" spectrum. Face-fuck me with an icicle.

@skinnylatte Can I offer you a brunch sandwich? A prime example of American Southern innovative cuisine (lol)
