   @artemis Travel is another way to broaden your world—if you can afford it. I find it strange when people are proud of never having left the town they grew up in.

     Yesterday I was talking about the mental dangers of using digital technology to connect with other people, given how much we have to censor ourselves. I think that's a genuine danger.

     But I can't even express how having this window on the world has changed who I am & how I experience life.

     Moving to a city sure fucking helped too. I think living in a city & reading are primarily how people used to have this experience before, if they were open to it, but

     Now imagine being someone who avoids everything "foreign", everything "heathen", everything queer & everything different.

     This stuff wouldn't exist for you. You would have no goddamn idea about much of anything, really, outside of a really tiny restricted community.

     This horrifies me more than anything...the idea that people exist who live in a micro-world.

     This is stuff I take for granted these days. I know that I can learn random stuff all the time about how other people live their lives & experience the world. It's often extremely small & mundane. It will be small things like learning a figure of speech people somewhere else use, or seeing some aspect of daily life for someone who lives very differently than me.

     I don't have to go looking for this stuff. It's just normal stuff that comes up in my feed sometimes. It's basically background noise.

     It's a very specific human experience, having to learn how to take care of your child's hair because most people of your culture & ethnicity don't have hair like that and so don't know what to do with it.

     It's not rare though. Normal people love who they love & partner up with people across race/culture/ethnicity all the freaking time. So out there in the world, a lot of people have some version of the experience I'm getting a glimpse into.

     Sometimes I forget how small the world right wing folks inhabit really is.

     When I think "small-minded", I usually focus on bigotry and self-centeredness, which is true, but when you think about how those things play out, it really does result in a *tiny* world & experience.

     I'm watching a video of a Black woman teaching a Korean woman how to style her Black-Asian daughter's hair, simply because observing this thing I have never experienced is interesting.
