Crazy how every job in existence now seems to be categorized as either "Job Americans won't do" or "Job Americans can't do" and the solution to both is to import more immigrants.
IM NOT IMPLYING THAT THE TELEVISION WOULD EVER LIE TO YOU, MIND JUST SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE SOLD TO PUBLIC TO JUSTIFY IMPORTING INFINITY BROWNS
3-5 years before you make money for an employer in a skilled trade. Its not that there isnt skilled tradesman here, its that nobody is doing it. Im in my 40s, so is every other mechanic I have seen or know. Kids ain't rushing to work outside in -30° to 120° because they think its menial labor. Thats what they've been taught.
@deprecated_ii Everything that's already here? Magic soil poofed it all into place. Or slaves built it. Linear time does not exist. America blinked into existence right after the civil rights act was passed.
@Evil_Bender@snappler Nobody's taking these jobs because they pay shit for new workers and it's not nearly enough to live on. A promise of good money in 10 years is worthless when rent needs to be paid today.
hes 3rd year and makes almost as much as me. I begged him not to waste his money on school. He can always take night classes at community college later. Told him all his friends going to $40k/yr schools for business will he making $17/hr with $150k in debt in 5 years, and he could be making $80k with 0 school loans.
@deprecated_ii@Evil_Bender@snappler Should only need to be a helper to a journeyman for 2 or 3 years tops I was clearing $1200 a week after taxes when I was a helper on a construction site making $18 an hour. There's a lot of money in it for new hires who are willing to travel and get that per diem
@deprecated_ii@Evil_Bender@snappler We need to setup paid apprenticeships that kids can take right after high school. It would be a much better path than college for most kids these days. We are sending way too many people to college. I'm skeptical that "AI will take all the jobs," but all the fake email jobs are going away and no one will miss them. Even most of the people who have them will be happier after a bit of disruption.
@deprecated_ii@Evil_Bender@snappler My local starts kids at $16/hr (50% of the journeyman wage) with an old school pension and a 401k-type retirement and healthcare paid by the contractor. goes to 53% of scale at 1000 hours, 55% at 2000, and +10% every 1500 hours thereafter until you test for license at 8000.
So really you're only eating shit for about a year, and we've been drowning in work for 5 or 10 years now out here so there's as much OT as you're willing to take
@Evil_Bender@snappler@deprecated_ii >Im in my 40s, so is every other mechanic I have seen or know. Have you ever considered that this might be self reinforcing? At my last job, I was younger than the youngest person by 15 years, and most were two or even three decades my senior. I was MORE than ready to put my head down and work, but the culture gap between me and the old alcoholic perverts on the job site ensures I'm "not fit for the team." Enjoy the widening age gap, because it's going to get worse and it's not the young guys' fault. >Kids ain't rushing to work outside in -30° to 120° because they think its menial labor. Fuck you; pay me.
@Evil_Bender@deprecated_ii@snappler I'll believe in this imminent "collapse" when it happens. Until then, don't fucking lie about "lazy kids" when success and failure have almost nothing to do with effort and almost everything to do with luck. I've tried harder than anyone I know and it's gotten me nothing.
@Evil_Bender@deprecated_ii@snappler I have worked three different trade jobs in my "career path" at three different places, and the only ones willing to train were my coworkers. Maybe it's a string of bad luck, maybe it's all "excuses" to you, but I'm telling you what the problem is from a young person's point of view and you're dismissing it because you don't like what you hear.
@Evil_Bender@deprecated_ii@randbot@snappler but i will say the state of the world and economy right now people who weren't as motivated wouldn't have been so far down in the wrungs during the boomers time.
They wouldn't youre right. But this isnt 1970 and none of us are boomers. I've been where you guys are. Making shit money, being broke. ive had cars repossessed lost houses. Quitting and blaming shitskins or jews didnt fix it.
@Evil_Bender@deprecated_ii@randbot@snappler you know i dunno if the world NEEDS losers, i dunno if anyone HAS to be a loser, int he sense we're talking abotu, not int he sense that everyone gets a trophy after the season.
im telling you that wollowing like bitches blaming boomers or minorities or H1Bs are taking the jobs is a waste of time. Did boomers flood us with these problems, yes. But what have you done for yourselves to make yourself competitive in a job market? Think about it as an employer. I have a 29 year old White guy with a resume thats written on a napkin and says McDonald's and full of gaps. What value is he bringing to me?
