   One of the few times I’m flying to New York where it won’t take 16 hours (from Singapore). But the fact that it still takes 6 from San Francisco is a sense of scale of this country I don’t think I fully grasp

     Other time my brain could not process this was when I was in a train from Oakland to Portland and, after sleeping and waking up, we were still in California (testament to both the size of the state and also the slowness of our trains)

     (I’m from a country that is so small, we get other countries’ cellular networks and you have to turn off roaming otherwise you get charged while in the same country)

     @skinnylatte Hope you enjoy your time here!

     I love this city and living here has fundamentally altered how I travel. The lesson I learned is that you really can live somewhere for years -- if not your whole life -- and never get close to "seeing it all".

     So now when I travel I'm happy to stay away from the "checklist" touristy spots and just wander, knowing that as long as what I see is enjoyable and new, the trip will be enjoyable.

     @elengale I love it too. New York City is one of the few places I truly feel I could just exist and never leave. It’s one of my favorite places in the world.

     @skinnylatte I'll talk to people coming to the US from other countries, and they'll say something along the lines of "Okay we're here for a week. We want to see New York and DC and the Golden Gate Bridge and the Grand Canyon and Disney World. We can do that in a week, right?"

     (though the weather is poor in a different way than from how it's been the last few weeks lol)

     @skinnylatte I get that feeling when traveling in Baltics. On non-Mercator maps they look small, population about half of Czechia (about same as Singapore) but size more than twice as big (238 times bigger than Singapore).

     @skinnylatte Reminds me of how we used to have interstate roaming in India few years back and living near border was no fun. Had to keep network on manual as well as roaming disabled. Thankfully ISPs fixed their stupidity now.
