     @augustus i liked it back then too but now they just look really bland and their cover is bland and their imitation of michael jackson is insulting. they're not qualified to smell michael jackson's shit. I'm also listening to a bunch of mashups and trying to get a handle on how i feel about them. when you mash up pop songs they often are fun and its not ruining anything because they're just pop songs. but sometimes they seem too silly

     @Moon I remember Alien Ant Farm only because of their cover of smooth criminal getting a lot of airplay. I like the cover more because it is a heavier song but I don't mind the original as well. Though it must suck for their band knowing they faded from the spotlight only to be rememered as being that michael jackson cover band.

     @Moon @augustus with jackson, watching his videos is essential, i think. if you look at someting like 'black or white', there's so many great dancers in the video, but he's the best, and effortlessly.

     I'm in the version where the MJ Dance Kid has the surgical mask on. MJ pitched a fit and they had to reshoot that bit and I wasn't called back because lol props that eat.
     
     I was also in the video for The Movies, got to meet Pat Morita which was cool.

     @Moon I am oddly nostalgic for that period of music though the early 2000's still had end cust of the late 90's rock scene influence and then by the mid 2000's it went to shit with the rise of emo music and hip hop. Nothing more cringey than seeing suburban white kids wearing baggy jeans and south pole hoodies spouting non-sense like G-G-G-Unit

     There were a lot of weird covers in the 2000s and late 90s, I mean that's where the infamous "depressed mad world" cover came from.

     @ArdainianRight @ooignignoktoo i don't listen to a lot of indie music so there could be a lot of cool innovation going on there right now for all i know. but i listened to my sharona this morning and love it or hate it, it was different sounding than everything else to me. there are youtube videos where they overlay modernish pop songs and show how they're frequently basically the same song reworked a little, which is why you might feel dissatisfaction listening to it: you may not have heard "that" song before, but your brain has.

     @kolya i was a kid so he was a permanent fixture before i would ahve been able to rationalize what was really happening. and by that time it would be like criticizing air. there are a lot of different kinds of artists and i have a special consideration for people that are just really really good at presentation.

     @Moon well to me he never felt like an authentic artist. he created great pop songs, but it was all art and no heart. he vanished behind that stage personality. and I could never relate to him.
     I felt a little bit sorry when I heard he died, but I was also glad I had never become a fan, because I wouldn't have wanted to be part of that.
