So yeah I think forum rules are more about constraining moderator actions to be somewhat coherent than about correcting user behavior on a day to day basis because most people just follow the rules actually - lainy likes this.

Mods are super users so they need extra scrutiny along with extra power -

@sun Do you miss forums? the way threads were organized was more constructive and less toxic than this twitter feed thing were people just poop random thoughts into the ether -

In addition to this, having a catalogue of old threads (or long-running threads) created a form of memory across time that I think is being systematically eliminated from the surface web.

@gabriel @Ergo the modern interactive web is embodied by YouTube comments. You cannot sort them or search them or filter them. They use opaque ordering algorithm, threading is just cosmetic and only goes one level deep, posts are filtered for arbitrary reasons. The reason they exist is companies want engagement and feeling like you’re part of the conversation attracts everyone. but they don’t want it to be possible to actually discuss anything because that is a liability. The comments are engagement flypaper and nothing more so they just give you a place to shit out a reply and then it effectively vanishes into a swamp -

@phnt @Ergo I used to think that modern forum software defaults could address problems with forums but now it just looks like gross gamification so I don’t know how to fix forums but something like forums needs to continue to exist -

@Ergo @sun It's called micro-blogging for a reason.
And no, I don't miss forums to some extent. The never-ending "muh necro" and resulting thread locks killed the usefulness of them. And what forums remain are usually managed by morons (Vogons). -

@sun Being a fedi mod back in early fedi was super fun, admins told me "these are the rules that must be followed", I enforced them on a few insane furries, and the site went up in flames and they got mad at it, even though they had to admit I did exactly what I was hired to do in a flawless way.
