  like, that's no problem for me, I have literally been a professional TIFF manager for the US government, and I'm all kinds of computers.
  but does the average person have even the slightest idea what the fuck a TIFF is, let alone the ability to print one?

  @lispi314 @leo @foone I don't either but well I feel like smartphones are specially designed to be painfully restrictive even compared to PDAs.
  At least unless you install a whole bunch of apps (and likely get malware in the process…).

  @lanodan @foone @leo I honestly don't get why they don't support TIFF.
  
  It's not like ImageIO plugins for it (namely TwelveMonkeys) aren't readily available.

  @foone possibly! it's also an earlier standard than PNG so it was probably the only vaguely-widely-supported patent-free compressed image format for anything written before '98.

  @foone oh, I actually kinda know something about this. for some reason TIFF is like *the* medical raster image format. x-rays, retinal imaging, the works, it's pretty much all TIFF.

  @gsuberland for a LONG while the only way we could deal with this was to call up our subcontractor who would go pull up that file on the spare windows 98 machine they had, print it out, then scan it back in on a newer computer

  @gsuberland it's JPEGs. the Windows Imaging program in windows 98 could produce TIFFs encoded with JPEG, but they're not readable by most other TIFF software (or at least weren't in 2010 when I had to deal with this)

  @gsuberland it's because the windows imaging component in windows 98 was made before the TIFF standard finalized the JPEG support, so it's not compatible with standard TIFFs with JPEG contents

  @foone I'm now wondering if some of the TIFF usage was down to people using TWAIN-adjacent image acquisition stuff 'cos it was easily available. 'cos I've seen sequentially numbered TIFFs used for CTs, which (unless they were like... using reels of film or something) wouldn't make much sense for an actual flatbed lol
  but now you have me intrigued... what's the rub?

  @foone @lispi314 @leo Yeah although we got sandboxing almost since the start of smartphones and I'd expect TIFF to be rather easy to sandbox (at least SELinux/seccomp/landlock-wise) since it's an image format.

  @lispi314 @leo @lanodan TIFF is a bit of a security nightmare, it's been used to hack a couple mobile devices before. so they might just have thrown it out for security reasons, as they figured TIFF is rare enough that supporting it isn't worth it

  @casandro @lanodan @leo @foone So, libtiff, the C library, has had a lot of RCEs.
  PDF in theory could have those as well if one's viewer actually uses the library for image decoding instead of refusing to render it. It also has the issue of Turing completeness and a JavaScript runtime with possible sandbox escapes on top of that.
  TIFF decoding is implemented properly in TwelveMonkeys. Handling PDF safely requires ignoring significant parts of the spec because permitting arbitrary computation means risking hardware vulnerabilities coming into play.
