Of all things in fediverse culture, the one that will always get to me is that shitting on Rust is such a sure fire way of getting boosts. The tech gatekeeping on here is sadly very real.

I appreciate the people trying to make C better. I understand and really value the criticisms of Rust, especially after some of the arms dealing issues. But this continual drive-by sniping of a really important project that's trying, however successfully, to challenge decades of intensely toxic and inhumane approaches to software development is a terrible fucking look.

If you disagree, the block button is right there.

Like, c'mon. We can put the toxic git-gud approach to language and toolchain development behind us. We don't need to haze people out of systems programming and embedded development.

Of course, I say "we," but it's not actually "we" any more. Because what I've learned is that you can never, ever be good enough for the C/C++ crowd. Ever.

@whitequark @negative12dollarbill @xgranade I cannot imagine C people making this criticism of Rust, given the popularity of C with defense contractors

@glyph @negative12dollarbill @xgranade i believe the people criticizing rust from an ethics perspective and people criticizing rust from a "git gud" perspective are two unrelated groups and Cassandra is talking about the latter here
