@m2m @rbairwell Most places I’ve worked for have their stuff together, but there has been exceptions. In the WordPress world it wasn’t even all that uncommon for places to tell their devs that they had to use their own computers.

that sounds so strange to me. I've had the exact opposite experience. And now that I'm on the 'other side' I can say for sure that all our new starters (and we have *a lot*, being a huge University faculty) receive their equipment on their first day, ready to go, with one of us giving an induction.

@chris What sort of company are you working at which has the equipment in place for somebody's scheduled start date? Some sort of magic shop?
I jest, but I honestly can't remember the last time in 20 years+/6+ jobs that things were ready for my start date (or anyone else: apart from the times I was involved in the recruitment process when the "letter of acceptance" asked them about their preferred setup so we ordered that as soon as we knew they would be starting in ~2-3 weeks)
