   @thomasfuchs @vkc also a lot of the 21st century ones aren't ideal because they have the brains of an early LCD inside, making them no longer work with lightguns out of the box. My WEGA is like this unfortunately.

     @thomasfuchs @vkc @mausimus I found out a local TV station had thrown out a dozen or so PVMs… the guy who told me managed to salvage one but said they were apparently intentionally damaged.

     often it's tax accounting, iirc?
     (unintended consequences of depreciation of assets vs expensing of minor CAPEX, it's easier to destroy it than to find a buyer who'll pay a nominal value, establishing value below depreciated value carried on books, to enable immediate write-down)
