Weird and honestly kinda ego-altruistic (but very powerful) aliens visit and give you a big button to press to stop all instances of just *one* disease on earth. All people with that disease will be cured of it and none more will ever suffer from it.

Which disease do you choose to eradicate?

@NanoRaptor very disturbing to see how many people equate "wrong values" with "disease"

@whitequark @NanoRaptor I haven't seen any "wrong values" ones in the replies except bigotry and fascism/capitalism which all seem pretty ok to declare wrong.

If I understand you right tho I think I agree that it's kinda offensive to group people actually suffering from things that are *diseases from their own perspective* with people whose beliefs/values arm harming others.

It probably depends on whether you define disease from an individual perspective or a population one. In the latter case "memetic diseases" seem like they should qualify.

@dalias @NanoRaptor i think the moment you declare a moral wrong a "disease" you fucked up. it is sufficient to state that something is morally wrong without medicalizing it; medicalizing values and beliefs is exactly what gave us shit like conversion therapy

@whitequark @NanoRaptor That added point makes it make a lot more sense, and actually ties in with how the "memetic disease" concept is coopted.

@dalias @whitequark @NanoRaptor the thing that jumps out to me is that if we could “fix” the worst of the wrong values then we could apply the already existing treatments and all but eliminate the most harmful infections and dramatically reduce the harm done by most other diseases, all at once. If that were an option there’s no other use of the button that would do anywhere near as much good

@dalias @whitequark @NanoRaptor I don’t know how to say why exactly, but I don’t think opposing bigotry is the same as supporting conversion therapy

@ShadSterling @whitequark @NanoRaptor This is my view too - that the wrong values contrary to both individual and collective wellbeing differ from something bigots deem wrong and try to label as a disease for bigoted purposes, on the basis that one causes harm and the other doesn't.

However I'm not the one on the receiving end of said bigotry, so I'll give a lot more weight to the opinions of folks who are.

@whitequark @dalias @NanoRaptor I have ZERO problem with bigots going through conversion therapy.
I'm trans, and I had that pushed on me. So don't tell me I'm wrong to medicalise hate, of any kind.
So yeah, Bigotry, Racism, Fascism ARE diseases and they need curing.

@dalias @ShadSterling @NanoRaptor the asshole who replied and then blocked me is definitely a part of the problem.
