@sindarina @skinnylatte I struggle with the concept of “the church” as it is used by most people to describe Christianity. Protestants are all over the place when it comes to their beliefs and teachings. There are many Protestant, especially evangelical congregations that I would argue are not Christian in their teachings. (1/2)

@Asymmetricblue @sindarina used to think so, and had a lot of faith and hope for more social justice interpretations of Christianity, but came around to the conclusion that until there is mass criticism of all of the unjust things that are being advocated for by all main schools of Christianity today, it is still valid for me personally to put them all in the same box of it’s not good enough, do better. Even if I understand the specific nuance for each. In the context of global politics and social issues and how almost all of them have failed at a lot of it, I don’t care for the nuance anymore.

@skinnylatte @sindarina Maybe it’s the midwesterner in me, surrounded by ELCA Lutherans, Congregationalists, PCUSA Presbyterians, and more of the liberal denominations that do advocate for the greater good that keeps me hopeful.
I can’t lump them all together for similar reasons why I can’t say all blacks/mexicans/indians/gays/trans/men/women/Jews/Muslims/etc are X.
I’m not ready to give up on nuance, even though it sometimes makes me tired in this world.

@Asymmetricblue @sindarina the difference for me is the power dynamics. The minorities you mention deserve the nuance in a world which has failed us. I won’t give that benefit of the doubt to the people who have power and harm others. Many liberal and progressive Christian leaders I know have no problem acknowledging that the modern ‘church’ today is oppressive and is different from the theology of liberation and justice that they believe in. I am perfectly fine criticizing man-made structures
