Anyone have any opinions on Chinese cellphones? The new Poco looks pretty good but I'm curious if software is a problem.

@BowsacNoodle Poco phones are rebranded Redmi phones, which are the cheap Xiaomi phones.
Xiaomi's software is shit, RAM management sucks, and you have to reboot it every few days or so for it to keep working well. Something I've never had to do with other androids.
Still, it could be worth it if cheap enough and you don't mind this

@Rwoeidk I started looking at what else is on the market since everything the carriers offer is garbage. I actually hate Google, but I have enough stuff I've purchased on play and I legitimately don't think an iPhone would let me do the types of stuff I do on a phone since I use it more like a laptop than a phone. Are any of the redmi/xiaomi phones worth it? I used to see some hype around them but now YouTube "reviews" are mostly [pictures of text with royalty free music in a video that I could have read 10x faster as an article]>

@Rwoeidk I'm looking for something with a big battery, decent camera, lots of RAM, and high end processor. I don't play a lot of games, but I do on occasion and for longevity sake I want a snapdragon elite or 8 series or whatever is high tier. I literally don't care if the phone is made of plastic or glass and aluminum; it will be in a case anyway.

I don't think they are. The hardware is good, but their software is shit and it kinda ruins it. Motorola and Samsung are better imo.

@Rwoeidk It sucks that companies keep putting out hardware beasts that have garbage software. I had an old OnePlus that I really love because they kind of had the sweet spot for both aspects down without having Samsung price inflation. Moto has gotten expensive and doesn't have a strong mid-range that I see.

Don't know if Costco still sells it, but they sold a pretty decent Moto phone for around $200.

@Rwoeidk @BowsacNoodle Yeah. Not really a problem for me as the first thing I'll do with a Xiaomi phone is change the OS and get rid of the Google spyware 🤣

Moto G Power probably. Those are usually decent but the camera is meh.

I'm now looking at the HMD Skyline. I like that it's DIY repairable (battery, screen, buttons, charger, camera???) and still water and dust resistant. A bit lower end in the processor than I want but it might be good enough. Anyone have thoughts?

from the way they lay out their advertising, they seem to think they're selling a camera, not a phone.. all the important specs are at the end, with all the trendy bs front loaded..

Yeah it's advertised as a sort of a steamer and 'influencer' device on the marketing end. I take a lot of pictures with my phone, so I do care about camera quality and the rare(!) SD card slot in the HMD. Specs are pretty good for the price but Nothing 3a pro beats it on value. An intangible attractive feature to me is that it's fully user repairable, and part of me wants to buy it just to support that. It's just a phone so I shouldn't care that much, but it's nice to be "excited" about something cool for a change.
